Prepaids ask for your social security number. The one CA that called stated their client would finish their "investigation" (I am assuming, maybe an asset search?) Would this show up? Could they freeze this prepaid card like they could my checking account?
So we are going to paperchecks. I am going to keep my checking account open. Lets say they put a freeze/levy on my account on the 1st and I go cash my check at my bank that same day - can the bank keep my money?
I still suspect you are being too paranoid. When a CA speaks of an "investigation", that most likely means the CA is reading a script with scary words on it to scare you into giving them money. And if the OC is in fact doing an "investigation" it probably means they are pulling up your account on their computer screen to double-check that you do in fact owe them money.
Any financial institution I can think of is going to ask for your SSN these days. that does not mean some creditor can discover it.

You are probably correct! However, I would hate to wake up tomorrow and my account be frozen and then how will I pay the rest of my bills.
They (CA) knew the value of my house. However whatever they were looking at was our house we sold in May 2008. The amount he read off was an approximate county appraisal for our old house.
I really would like to find the laws on texas and freezing accounts, well in something I could understand.
Ultimately, I guess I like to prepare for the worse and hope for the best!

Don't know what city you're in, but certainly in Travis county you can just go to and look up anyone's name or address, and get the latest county tax rolls and assessment if they own property -- lots of juicy details. So THAT's not hard to find out! But an easy way for a CA to look like he Knows Everything.

I know they can look at tax records, it's public information. However, I guess what I was trying to say with that is....The value they stated was the value of our old house that we sold in May 2008. The tax records were updated shortly after that. So whatever they were reading from was about 1 year old.
